International Business Machines Corporations (IBM) is an American multinational technology company that manufactures and markets computer hardware, middleware, and software, and offers hosting and consulting services in various areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology. The corporation currently has over 2,000 job openings, mostly in IT, across the United States. In response, IBM researched apprenticeship programs across Europe to help develop its own program. Stephen Dodd, Project Executive, explained the IT job market: “IT skills are perishable and have a very short shelf life. If we don’t build this talent pipeline, all these 2,000 jobs…will go unfilled.” Modern apprenticeships are increasingly centering on more skilled and complex fields as software and technology companies are discovering the benefits of apprenticeship programs.
